Comper swift build page 2
15. Beginning of wing construction. Conventionally built with ‘D’ box leading edge.
16. The wing has 16/th plywood trailing edge. All wing ribs 1/8th balsa.
17.The rear spar as shown is made from ¼ sheet balsa, notched around wing ribs half and half.
18.Shows nearly completed wing attatched to fuselage. Final sanding to shape of wing root can now be done.
19-27. Trail fit of wings onto fuselage. Apparent anhedral is because the wing struts and 1” phenolic wing joining tube are not yet fitted. Picture 26 shows pilots view.
28-31. Wing in various states of completion. Phenolic joining tube now fitted.
32. Wings complete and covered ready for Doping. Covering material used is ‘ Sig Coverall’. This is an excellent heat shrink fabric which has to be ironed on much like ‘solartex’ only ‘balsaloc’ has to be applied to the airframe first. It can also be applied by doping the airframe and then laying the fabric on and doping over it. This in turn melts the dope on the airframe thus adhering the fabric to it. I didn’t opt for this method because I thought it could get messy heat shrinking the covering afterwards. After covering the airframe will need 3 -4 coats of ‘non-shrinking dope to fill the weave of the cloth prior to painting.
